Much of northern Argentina and Uruguay has had dry and pleasant weather over the past several days, but a change in the pattern is coming to end the week.
A cold front pushing into Rio Negro will continue to lift northward Wednesday and Wednesday night and is expected to bring rain, some heavy, and locally strong thunderstorms to the Argentine provinces of Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Santa Fe and Cordoba as well as Uruguay on Thursday.
Some of the rain will be heavy enough to cause flash flooding with strong thunderstorms bringing the risk of locally damaging wind gusts and hail. The greatest risk of heavy rain and strong thunderstorms looks to be across southern Santa Fe, Entre Rios and northern Buenos Aires provinces in Argentina into southern Uruguay.
This front will bring the risk of gusty thunderstorms and locally heavy rain to far northern Argentina and Rio Grande Do Sul, Brazil, on Friday, while scattered showers are expected to linger over Uruguay and the Pampas of Argentina as a strong upper trough approaches.
This strong upper trough will evolve to an upper atmospheric low and lead to the development of a surface storm over Buenos Aires province on Saturday. This developing storm and associated frontal boundaries are expected to bring another round of heavier rain and locally strong thunderstorms to northern Argentina, Uruguay, southern Brazil and eastern Paraguay Saturday into Sunday. Some of the rain is expected to be heavy enough to produce areas of flash flooding with the risk of damaging wind gusts and hail in any locally strong thunderstorms.
Rain should wane from west to east Sunday night as the surface storm pushes eastward farther into the southern Atlantic Ocean, but showers can linger into Monday morning over eastern Uruguay, Santa Catarina state in Brazil and eastern Paraguay.
For the period from Thursday into Monday, we are expecting widespread rainfall of 50-100 mm (2-4 inches) with an AccuWeather Local StormMax(TM) of 200 mm (8 inches) from the Argentine provinces of La Pampa and Buenos Aires to Corrientes into Uruguay and southwestern Rio Grande Do Sul state in Brazil. Rainfall of 19-50 mm (0.75-2.00 inches) with an AccuWeather Local StormMax(TM) to 75 mm (3 inches) is expected from Chaco, eastern Formosa and Misiones provinces in Argentina and eastern Paraguay across the rest of Rio Grande Do Sul state and Santa Catarina state in Brazil.
A period of drier weather is expected across these areas from Tuesday into Thursday.
