By Eric Leister, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

Records continue to fall across the United Kingdom as the summer as a whole has been declared the joint hottest on record for the United Kingdom as a whole and the hottest ever for England.

The summer has tied the summers of 1976, 2003 and 2006 for the mark of hottest summer on record for the country as a whole.

Met Office

A report released by the Met Office showed how extreme the summer was in several categories and featured the above graphics.

The summer as a whole is likely to be a top 5 sunniest for the U.K. as a whole and top 5 driest for England.

However, temperatures were the biggest anomaly as U.K. as a whole was 1.5 C (2.7 F ) above normal with England being 1.7 C (3.1 F) above normal.

Looking at the upcoming autumn, I expect temperatures to remain above normal while there will be the typical cooling trend as the season progresses.

A a drier than normal September will transition to near or even slightly above normal by November bringing much needed rainfall in advance of the upcoming winter season.
