Neoguri Stats and Update
The wraith of former Super Typhoon Neoguri was felt across parts of the Ryukyu Islands on Tuesday as the storm plowed northward.
While only a fraction of its former self, Neoguri still remains a dangerous typhoon tracking northward across the East China Sea.
Damaging winds were reported across much of Okinawa as the storm passed just to the west. Peak wind gusts reached 119 mph in Tokashiki, Japan, with wind gusts near 100 mph at Kadena Air Base.
More than 7 inches (175 mm) of rain fell in Naha with wind gusts over 100 mph during the height of the storm.
The typhoon reached winds of 155 mph (250 kph) at its peak strength, but it has since weakened to 120 mph (190 kph) as of Tuesday afternoon. Further weakening is expected as the storm track north to northeast over the next 24 hours and encounters more dry air, cooler waters and increasing wind shear.
At landfall in Kyushu, Japan, Neoguri will likely be a minimal typhoon or strong tropical storm that is undergoing extra-tropical transformation as it interacts with a trough to the north.
Regardless heavy rain will elevate the risk for flooding and mudslides in southern Japan from Wednesday into Thursday.
