Global weather stories to monitor this week

By Eric Leister, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

Several weather stories are expected to make the news this week ranging from tropical threats to dangerous heat waves.

Three main areas for concern jump out to me this morning as I take a look at the expected weather around the world this week.

Tropical Storm Jongdari battered Japan this weekend but it might not be done causing trouble. While certainly much weaker than when it made landfall in eastern Japan as a typhoon on Saturday, Jongdari looks like it will hold together and exit Japan into the East China Sea early this week.

Jongdari GFS

GFS image depicting a stronger Jongdari approaching eastern China on Thursday, local time.

The tropical cyclone is expected to more or less stall with a slow drift toward the west through Wednesday and then advance toward China by Thursday.

An expected track would take the cyclone into eastern China, somewhere within a few hundred miles of Shanghai between Thursday and Friday.

These areas have recently endured tropical rainfall as Severe Tropical Storm Ampil battered the region only a week or so ago.

Europe Heat

My next area of concern will be western Europe where once again heat looks to be a big story this week.

Fresh off a major heat wave, locations from Spain to France will once again be boiling this week.

The difference is this round looks to bring the brunt of the heat to Spain as well as Portugal. Northern France will see dangerous heat, but miss out on the worst of the event this round.

Temperatures could soar above 43 C (110 F) across much of Portugal as well as western and central Spain for multiple days from late this week into this weekend.

Mexico Threat

GFS image showing a powerful tropical cyclone south of Mexico on Saturday.

Finally we will be monitoring for a potential tropical system near Mexico this week.

At this time I would put the chance for development at a high level, but the impacts to land at a low level. As has been the case for much of this season development has been followed by storms tracking parallel or away from the Mexico coastline keeping areas from seeing the worst of the storm.

That looks to be the case again this week; however, a jog to the north could bring more significant impacts to southern Mexico.
