Very bright meteor in Australia

By Dave Samuhel, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

Published May 22, 2019 9:24 PM EST | Updated May 22, 2019 9:35 PM EST

Copied

A meteor lit up the night sky over Adelaide, Australia Tuesday night.

You can see how bright the meteor was, lighting up much of the sky. This is considered a bolide. It may have briefly reached superbolide status, which is a fireball meteor brighter than the sun. A bolide has a brightness between that of the full moon and the sun.

Check out a few more angles of this meteor.

There is no major meteor shower occurring right now. But, this could be a remnant of the eta Aquarrids meteor shower that peaked early this month. It is one of the most active showers of the year for the southern hemisphere.

The next major meteor shower is the Perseids in August. Thanks for reading! Just look up; you never know what you will see!
