Full Wolf Moon tonight
Published Jan 10, 2020 6:10 PM EDT
The full moon rises tonight! The January full moon is known as the Full “Wolf” Moon. This name, like most of the names for full moons, originates with Native American folklore.
There will be a lunar eclipse as well. You will have a lunar eclipse only during a full moon. But, this is a non-event for the United States. It will only be visible across the Eastern Hemisphere.
Even there, it will not be much of a show. It will be a penumbral eclipse, meaning it will stay out of the main part of Earth’s shadow. It will dim very slightly even where it is visible, so most people do not notice penumbral eclipses.
The next total lunar eclipse that will be visible in North America will occur on May 26, 2021. Curious about future eclipses? Check out the NASA eclipse page to see the exact time of lunar eclipses over the next decade.
Thanks for reading. Just look up; you never know what you will see!
