Weather pattern Update into the End of July

By Staff

Published Jun 28, 2013 2:27 PM EDT | Updated Jun 28, 2013 1:05 PM EDT

Copied

Summer heat likely to take hold from west to east across a large chunk of Canada over the next few weeks as the main jet stream weakens and shifts north.

Hottest weather for the Prairies in the short range will likely be in the Thursday/Friday period of next week with temperatures well above normal from Alberta through Manitoba.

It appears that this very warm air mass could spread into eastern Canada by next weekend (July 6th/7th)

Fairly dry pattern shaping up across most of the Prairies during the first week of July.

Temperatures will continue to average above normal throughout much of western and central Canada for the first week of July.

Below is my interpretation of the latest ECMWF model long range......

The joy of travel

Our AccuWeather team had an excellent visit in Toronto yesterday. The flight going there was fine and we passed right over Niagara Falls which was pretty cool.

Our taxi driver in Toronto almost got us into an accident on the way to the hotel then we enjoyed a nice walk downtown with the cooling breeze off the lake.

The trip home was uneventful until we were getting close to board our connecting flight to State College, PA out of Philadelphia International.

A line of severe thunderstorms had formed across central Pennsylvania yesterday afternoon and was growing as it tracked eastward. It looked like the storms would remain far enough to our east at the time of our departure, but the FAA had other plans and reduced the number of planes in the airspace between DC and Philly. Unfortunately our plane was one of them and the flight was canceled. There was a second flight about 4.5 hours later, but I knew by that time that the severe weather would be into the area and the chances of that flight getting out were slim.

There was a final flight for 11pm that night that was offered and we just decided to rent a car and drive the 3.5-4 hrs back to State College. That late night flight ended up leaving around midnight so I am glad we took the rental car.

Unfortunately, we ended up driving right into the heart of the storms and spent about two-thirds of the trip driving through heavy downpours, flooded sections of highway and also a small mudslide into one lane of the highway!

Through all that I am still glad we took the rental. Waiting in that airport for another 8 hours was not going to happen this time! The last trip we took was into Colorado and we ended up sleeping in Detroit airport for the night as the airline sold our seats since we were 2 minutes too late off their connecting flight.
