An ongoing winter storm is expected to significantly disrupt travel and could become the most impactful winter storm in several years. Steady snow will continue into Sunday evening before some sleet will mix in over part of the area Sunday night. By Monday morning, the storm is expected to taper off to a few flurries. A total of 8 inches of snow is forecast in the city, though amounts will depend on the track and intensity of a coastal storm as well as the extent of any sleet or freezing rain. A stronger storm with little or no mixing could result in around a foot of snow. The greatest chance for near a foot of accumulation extends across northwestern New Jersey and adjacent parts of southeastern New York. Streets and highways are likely to become snow packed and slippery for much of the storm. Frigid air following the system is expected to limit natural melting for several days.
