Severe storms put a damper on pre-Super Bowl festivities, canceling Harry Styles concert

Severe weather intruded upon festivities prior to the Super Bowl in Miami, Florida, on Jan. 31. Many visitors had to tread through ankle-deep floodwaters.

As AccuWeather warned about late this past week, severe weather is disrupting outdoor activities as millions flock to South Florida ahead of the Super Bowl. According to CNBC, the Greater Miami area is expecting to see 150,000 out-of-town visitors this weekend, 90,000 of which will be flying out of the area by way of Miami International on Monday.

Showers and thunderstorms rushed in from the Gulf during Friday evening, initially targeting places like Fort Myers, Naples, and the Keys.

The severe weather moved eastward to Miami on Friday night, forcing fans at a Harry Styles concert to evacuate due to dangerous weather conditions. The concert was later canceled.

Harry apologized to fans on Twitter, saying "The fire department would not let us do the show under any circumstances. Please stay safe. I'm so disappointed, and I’m sorry."

Harry was set to preform with Lizzo and Mark Ronson at the Meridian, a brand-new concert venue that opened just in time for Super Bowl weekend, according to the Miami Herald. The venue is described as a large tent-like structure.

Event organizers will need to keep a close eye through the day on Saturday across Miami as the safety of the visitors would not want to be put in jeopardy. Remember, when thunder roars, head indoors.

Boaters in the area will also want to monitor the weather closely, as waterspouts could pop up.

Along with the localized threat for severe weather through the first half of the weekend, flooding in typical low-lying locales may occur as well, something that the city of Miami and surrounding areas know all too well.

Aside from a lingering shower or two Saturday evening, an expanding area of high pressure moving into Florida is expected to punt the unsettled weather off the Atlantic coast before the big game on Sunday.

In the wake of the messy weather to start the weekend, much of Florida and the rest of the Southeast can expect dry and settled conditions for Super Bowl Sunday. During the day, a mostly sunny sky, temperatures in the lower 70s F and low humidity levels are expected to grace South Florida.

While Mother Nature will call the plays through the first half of the weekend across Florida, fans and players alike will elect to receive dry and settled weather for the Super Bowl.

Quiet conditions are expected through the entirety of the big game on Sunday, with temperatures sitting comfortably in the middle 60s F around kickoff and slowly falling to around 60 F by the time a new Super Bowl champion is crowned.
