AccuWeather Introduces First-Of-Its-Kind Brightness Index
AccuWeather Global Weather Center – November 8, 2023 – AccuWeather, the undisputed leader in Superior Accuracy™ in weather forecasting, announced today the creation a new patented index to give people a better characterization and description of the weather they will experience that day and in the future: the AccuLumen Brightness Index™.
Weather forecasters have traditionally focused on the condition of the sky to describe the weather, using terms like partly cloudy, mostly cloudy, partly sunny, and the like. AccuWeather began introducing better terms in the 1970s in language people could understand, such as overcast, intervals of clouds and sunshine, bright sunshine, dark clouds, and other descriptive words that had not been previously used – now we are taking our descriptions to a new level.
“Many people do not look at the sky, but rather look out the window to see if the day is bright and beautiful, dull and dismal, or something in between,” said AccuWeather Founder & Executive Chairman Dr. Joel N. Myers. “Brightness can affect people’s moods, their buying habits, their desire to either want to go out and engage in activities or sit at home inside in front of the television. It can also be a health and safety issue, from light-triggered migraines and UV exposure to extreme glare on roadways that can cause traffic accidents. Our mission at AccuWeather is to save lives, protect property, and help people make the best weather-impacted decisions, and this is the latest tool in the evolution of weather forecasting.”
The new AccuLumen Brightness Index™ system, which is a more descriptive and better way of characterizing the brightness of the day, is measured on a scale from 1 to 10, where 1 is a gray, dark, dismal day and a 10 is a very bright day with blue sunny skies, no clouds, no pollution, and a high level of glare at sunrise and sunset.
The AccuLumen Brightness Index™ Scale:
-
darkish grey
-
slate grey
-
dull
-
dim
-
medium
-
light
-
rather bright
-
bright
-
very bright
-
brilliant
The new AccuLumen Brightness Index™ is a simple but revolutionary concept and will help people instantly have better insight into their day. It will be introduced on the AccuWeather Network, on television stations and in publications that carry AccuWeather’s exclusive forecasts, and on AccuWeather.com and the AccuWeather app.
“This new index will further categorize the weather and the environment for the day, giving AccuWeather users even more information to help them make better decisions about their activities,” said Chris Patti, Chief Data Architect at AccuWeather. “Being aware of changes in light can help people plan ahead for things that matter to them and may impact their daily lives, whether that means bringing sunglasses for a safer commute, or scheduling the best time for an outdoor photo shoot for the family holiday card.”
AccuWeather has played a critical role in advancing the finely tuned art and science of weather prediction, continually refining and improving weather forecasting for six decades. The addition of this new index, developed over many years, adds to AccuWeather’s many significant innovations that have saved over 10,000 lives and prevented injury and harm to over 100,000 people. Other unique and beneficial AccuWeather innovations include the Air Quality Index, hourly UV levels, and the AccuWeather RealImpact™ Scale for Hurricanes, as well as the patented RealFeel®, RealFeel Sun™, and RealFeel Shade™ temperature comfort indexes.
