Five personal care changes to make in the winter

By Staff, AccuWeather

Copied

With the new season comes a slew of things that are bad for your health both mentally and physically. Here are some things you can do to take care of yourself this winter.

Though the winter season brings pleasantries like the holidays and beautiful snow days, the weather change can wreak havoc on your personal care. This is why it's such a wise move to implement effective personal care changes as the weather gets colder. If you don't know how or where to get started, consider the following five tips.

Add Moisture

As the weather gets colder, the air becomes drier. Not only will you feel the impact outdoors, but you'll feel the impact inside of your home. Opening the windows will only make matters worse. Instead, you'll want to add moisture to the air by purchasing a humidifier. Depending on the size of your home, you might want to buy one or two machines. Once you fill the machine with water, it will disperse it into the air. Over time, you'll feel the impact of the moisture in the air because it'll feel easier to breathe. You can also purchase a thermostat that will monitor the level of humidity in the air. It's a great idea to sleep with a humidifier next to your bed. It'll be easier to sleep comfortably and receive moisture for your skin. Just make sure that you don't keep the humidifier in an area that will encourage mold. It's also wise to consider when the best time is for turning on the humidifier for the best results.

Bundle Up

That lightweight trench coat isn't going to work throughout the entire year. You're going to need layers. Find leggings that aren't bulky that you can layer underneath your clothing. Get rid of the flats during the winter months. Instead, purchase boots that provide proper insulation. Purchase thick snow boots to protect your feet in the snow. You don't want to deal with wet feet because you're still wearing the same flats from last Spring. Always keep your head covered. Your head is one of the hottest parts of your system. Keep it protected and warm by covering your head with a winter hat. There are plenty of stylish options like fedoras that will give you a chic look. Don't allow fashion to be the reason why you don't bundle up. If you leave your body open to the elements, you'll increase your chances of getting sick.

Change Skincare Products

If you struggle with skin issues like eczema or psoriasis, your struggles probably increase when you're in the midst of a cold winter. The air is so dry during the cold months, so it's wise to increase the amount of moisture-retaining products you use. Check out different online reviews for moisturizers that will work well for your skin in the colder months. Always remember to read the labels to see what the ingredients are. Hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and lanolin are some of the ingredients that will either provide moisture or seal it in. Develop a skincare routine with steps. Once you cleanse your skin, follow it up with the toner and moisturizer. Use a great moisturizer for your lips as well.

Cultivate a Strong Exercise Routine

When it's cold outside, it's so tempting to stay inside and snuggle under the covers. However, a huge part of personal care involves maintaining an active lifestyle. This means that you'll need to exercise. Granted, you don't have to exercise outside when it's cold. You can get a gym membership or do home workouts that will get the heart rate up, burn those calories, and keep you healthy. You can figure out where the best place is to exercise. Although, it doesn't hurt to keep an eye on the weather forecast. If there's a day when the weather is warm enough to enjoy an outdoor workout, take advantage of the seasonal change.

Boost the Immune System

If you don't have a strong immune system, it's easier to catch a cold when it's spreading. So many people tend to get sick during the colder months. This is why you'll want to stay on top of your hydration, rest, and proper nutrition. Increase your intake of Vitamin C by eating green, leafy vegetables, and citrus fruits. Take healthy vitamins and supplements to help you boost your immune system. Personal care involves making sure you don't get sick. It is possible to make it through the "cold and flu" season without getting sick.

As you begin to implement these tips into your seasonal routine, you'll be able to see the benefits in the way you look and feel. It's incredible how a simple shift or intentional change can improve your quality of life in impactful ways. So many people don't think about purchases like a humidifier or a different sunscreen protectant for the colder months. However, once you make these changes, you'll be more aware of ways you can continue to improve your self-care and quality of life.
