Saturday, June 8 is World Ocean Day
Every year on June 8 since 1992, World Ocean Day increases awareness of the importance of Earth’s oceans, which make up 70 percent of the planet’s entire surface.
(CNN) — Saturday, June 8 is World Ocean Day, although it might not seem like there’s much to celebrate this year.
From rising ocean temperatures to plastics in the water and dying coral reefs, there’s a lot to worry about.
But everyone can make small changes that make a difference.
Meanwhile, many organizations are tackling the “big picture” issues.
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a collection of marine debris in the North Pacific Ocean. Also known as the Pacific trash vortex, the garbage patch is actually two distinct collections of debris bounded by the massive North Pacific Subtropical Gyre.
