Each time lightning strikes the ground or ocean, it is detected by the U.S. Precision Lightning Network and plotted on this map. Two hour's worth of strikes are plotted by color, with orange being the oldest and white the newest. Larger regionalized maps of lightning strikes are available on AccuWeather.com Premium. Real-time, street-level lightning strike data and e-mail alerts can be obtained through our LightningPlus service.
