Tie down your tents: Gusty winds to whip through Coachella on weekend 2
A storm will stir gusty winds as over a hundred thousand people converge on Southern California for the final weekend of Coachella 2016.
The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, currently in its 17th year of existence, attracts music and arts lovers from around the world to Indio, California, each spring.
Warm and dry conditions that highlighted the first weekend of the festival are expected to continue during the final weekend of the event, through Sunday, April 24, as a storm moves north of the area. This is the fifth year in a row that the festival has been held as a two-weekend event.
"Even though the storm will be lifting to the north, the flow around the system will generate gusty winds into Saturday," according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski.
A few gusts from the west and north may top 35 mph into Saturday.
The storm moved into California on Friday, but rain stayed to the north of Southern California.
Hats, sunglasses and sunscreen will be needed as clouds will be limited each day of the festival. The sun’s strength in April is comparable to August, so anyone in the sun for a length of time can easily be burned if not properly protected.
Festival-goers can take advantage of the numerous shaded areas on the grounds to find temporary relief from the heat. High temperatures are expected to reach the low 90s F each day this weekend.
Plenty of non-alcoholic beverages, especially water, will be needed in order to prevent dehydration in the hot sun.
Those planning to camp at the festival should not have to contend with soggy grounds or rain dampening their tent.
However, campers should ensure their tents and other objects are properly secured as winds will be rather strong during the first part of the weekend, according to Doll.
Dry weather is expected to continue into Sunday evening as the festival winds down and party-goers begin their journey home.
