Was Sago Explosion Lightning, Or Not?
The reports issued by the International Coal Group this week conflict as to what the cause of the Sago Mine Explosion was:
You may recall that I posted several lightning strike images from the USPLN (U.S. Precision Lightning Network), on the morning of January 3rd, including the one below:
On January 9th, USPLN issued this press release [PDF], saying:
The U.S. Precision Lightning Network (USPLN) detected a powerful lightning stroke within 450 meters (yards) of the West Virginia mine 2 seconds before seismic activity indicative of the explosion was recorded.
So from a meteorological perspective, the lightning theory is at least "Plausible" (to borrow a Mythbusters term). The ICG just needs to scientifically link the cause and effect.
