The First Noel?
UPDATE: By the way, did you know this? A lot of the impact on Florida will come tomorrow, before Noel even arrives, because of the strong squeeze of "pressure gradient" (difference in atmospheric pressure) between the tropical storm and a strong high pressure system off the mid-Atlantic coast.

More than a couple bloggers, including myself, were tempted to write a headline saying "The First Noel" but actually there have been two storms previously named Noel, in the years 1995 and 2001. Hurricane names have been cycled every 6 years since 1979 and we didn't make it to "N" in 1989 or 1983 (in fact 1983 was a record low year with only 4 names storms!)
The other two Noels were hurricanes, beating Noel 2007's current status, but both were out in the middle of the Atlantic ocean. Other "N" storms were: Nana (1990), Nicole (1998), Nadine (2000), Nicole (2004), and Nate (2005).

Tropical Storm Noel brought heavy rain and flooding to the Dominican Republic as officials reported at least 20 people dead and 20 others missing in the storm that lashed Hispaniola, the island the country shares with Haiti.
