Spring 2016 Weather Gadget Review
- Amcrest 720p Webcam (on- board web server & FTP capability): $69 (June 9th ONLY)
- AcuRite 5-in-1 Weather Station w/ Internet Connect: $139!
- 15% off NetAtmo Weather Station
As part of my continuing Spring 2016 Gadget Review, I recently took a look at a number of weather-related tech products. I've combined them all into the report below.
- 360fly: The future of weather video is 360
- AcuRite measures whole home: water, soil, HVAC
- Facebook Live users cover Houston flooding!
First, the Miops Smartphone Controllable Camera Trigger (originally known as NeroTrigger, which raised over $300,000 on Kickstarter). This thing is going to be way too much fun. You can control your DSLR by lazer, sound and timer and photograph things like bursting water balloons and most importantly: CAPTURE LIGHTNING!
Next up, the Dreamwave Survivor is a portable bluetooth speaker, car battery charger, cell phone / tablet battery charger, flashlight and more. It's a must have for your next storm chase -- or post-disaster prep bag.
The first thing I did was put my Amazon Kindle and turn it into a powered, portable television, using my wifi to connect to the Xfinity TV app, where you can stream news channels live:
Here's something storm chasers need, but rarely think about: Sunglasses!
My eyes have always been sensitive to light and I can tell you I go through several cheap, uncomfortable pairs of shades every year, as do many storm chasers. Fatheadz sunglasses have restored my faith that I can have comfortable, durable sunglasses. BONUS: Here's another video review from a friend wearing Fatheadz!
Speaking of storm chasers, AccuWeather.com has had its staff out in the storm for over 10 years (local TV affiliates, 30 years). Through that time we've learned the hard way: You must protect your phones from rain and wind. That's why we carry the Pelican Marine iPhone case which guarantees the phone doesn't get wet (they also have cases for Android).
I'm also hyped about the Pelican Storm Cases I've received in the mail recently. Aptly named, they are going to be used for storm chasing. I've got so much gear now that I carry around multiple backpacks that are very inefficient when it comes to finding things. Now I've got all my gadgets laid out and labeled and can quickly deploy in front of a storm to get better video and photos!
Got kids? Teacher? These weather-related science kits from Alex Brands are too cute. These are just a couple of nearly 100 different kits available. See these weather and space kits in action on our Astronomy Blog.
Next up... I've always been a bit of a radio geek. Before the Internet, it was the only way to communicate in real-time, kids! The ETON Field Grundig Edition radio covers Shortwave and AM/FM and has the RDS (advanced FM reception showing call letters, artists, etc.).
BONUS: And last but in no way least, some gadget additional reviews from Storm Chaser Ron Shawley, who helps me review weather-related gadgets.
First up -- I've talked about AcuRite weather stations before, and in fact I have one online at my house. I also carry the AcuRite Lightning Detector (second video) on all my local storm chases.
Another tool we frequently use is Cyberlink PowerDirector. PowerDirector is a full-featured video editor for a fraction of a price of professional tools like Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro. Most of the storm chasing and weather videos that Ron and I produce are using PowerDirector.
