RP: Radar From Deadly TX Tornado
I wanted to present some radar animations of the impressive and deadly supercell severe thunderstorm that moved from Mexico into the Eagle Pass, Texas area yesterday afternoon. Below is a video showing and explaining the radar animations and stills of the storm, from AccuWeather.com RadarPlus. The hi-resolution movies, and still shots, can be downloaded below.
Like I said in a post last month, large supercells coming in from Mexico are not uncommon, but usually they don't get media attention because population is so low there. I would imagine that storm chasers also don't frequent the area due to food & fueling locations being far apart, and because they can't go over the Mexican border.
NOAA says: "The most serious storm produced a tornado that touched down in Mexico then moved across the Rio Grande River into Eagle Pass, Texas, at about 7:01 p.m. CDT." WNBC has video of the damage.
KRGV says that 10 people were killed in the U.S. and 80 people were injured in Mexico with another 76 in the U.S., and that the U.S. Border Patrol is participating in search and rescue.
According to The Tornado Project, only 8 tornadoes occurred in Maverick County, Texas between 1950 and 1995 and NCDC adds 4 since 1995, the most recent being in 2004, when 3 tornadoes occurred on November 23rd (they could have been the same tornado which would bring the total to only 9 since 1950).
