Record Atlantic Activity, Hurricane Igor's Second Wind
UPDATE 9/16: As of 11 AM today, Karl has become a hurricane so we now have 3 hurricanes at the same time (including Igor and Julia). Screen capture below updated.
There are three storms in the Atlantic today (as you can see from the screen capture, via our Hurricane Center. What's the record for hurricanes at the same time? Only four, in 1998, according to the Hurricane FAQ. That could happen if Karl is upgraded. But more importantly, there are two Category 4 hurricanes at the same time today, something that hasn't happened since 1926 and never at these intensities according to WattsUpWithThat, who also says that Hurricane Julia is the strongest storm that far east.
Hurricane Igor spiked to 155 mph last night, one notch away from a Category 5 storm. At that time the NHC had his probability of being a Cat 5 at 26%. Both his wind speeds and the probability are down this morning. Here is a graph of wind and pressure from our Interactive Hurricane Tracker (gusts estimated by AccuWeather) where you can see his "second wind" if you will.
