Real World Examples of Condensation

By Jesse Ferrell, AccuWeather meteorologist and senior weather editor

They are studying cloud condensation this week in her Meteorology section of 7th Grade Science. I'm always one for giving real-world examples of things, so the video blog below explains what's happening in some photos of condensation in action. These pictures, from the AccuWeather Photo Gallery, illustrate the fact that, when air cools, water vapor condenses into water droplets around particles of dust or smoke in the atmosphere.

Below are each of the photos discussed within:

Lenticular clouds over on May 10, 2007, by PhotoGallery/Iggor

Lenticular wave clouds are formed when air moves up over mountains, cooling sufficiently for condensation to take place. Sometimes multiple lenticular wave clouds like this are formed downstream from the original cloud. Note that the cloud appears to be sitting still but actually the air continually forms the cloud as it flows over the mountain. This picture was taken from the parking lot of Mount Mitchell, NC, the highest point east of the Mississippi at 6684 feet. We are looking northeasterly I believe. This is the second photo I took of these lenticular wave clouds. These type of wave clouds were not uncommon in the mountains of NC, but these are certainly the most beautiful I have seen. I am unsure of the date this photo was taken but I`m guessing March 1992. This is one of my favorite photos.

Lenticular cloud over the Rockies October 25, 2005, by PhotoGallery/Raligard.

Clouds are formed when water vapor condenses around particles in the air. In this case, the smoke provided ample particles. This type of cloud is known as pyrocumulus. This picture was taken from Long Beach, NC. I was there on vacation and saw this huge plume of smoke emanating from a large forest fire considerably inland. The date of this picture is unknown. It is almost certainly either June or August - my vacation months, during the early 1990`s.

I talked in the video about there being more than one wave cloud downwind from a mountain... here is a graphic illustrating that:
