Radar Shows ThunderSleet In New Mexico
UPDATE (2 PM CT): Up to an inch of ice has been reported in southern Oklahoma and northern Texas; over 2 inches of sleet have also fallen in Oklahoma. Widespread tree & power line damage is reported.
The observations from Clovis, New Mexico this morning are indicating a horrific combination of freezing fog, heavy blowing snow, ice pellets (sleet), and thunder, with zero visibility (thanks for the tip Mike Smith). Here's a radar/lightning image from MapSpace at 10 AM ET:
You can see that, indeed, some lightning from the storms to the south is extending into the snow and ice. Mike says on his blog "there may be power outages in Oklahoma and the southeast Texas Panhandle that will last for days" and says that I-40 may be closed before the end of the day.
