Philly Radar Back Up... For Now
Several blog readers have written in to enquire why the Philadelphia (technically Fort Dix, New Jersey) NEXRAD radar has been down so much lately. The radar's maintenance is the responsibility of NOAA and by this I mean that your tax dollars are used to keep the radars running. Last week they issued this statement:

But this morning at 13:47Z, the radar came back online after its 15-day outage. Hopefully this means that the maintenance is complete. Here's an animation with the last frames on June 18th and first frames this morning.
At any one time, 5-10 radars (out of the 155 installations) are typically offline, due to routine maintenance or unexpected failures. You can see which radars are dead by looking at the red boxes on NOAA's site and you can get archived status messages on the WeatherMatrix site.
