More Severe: ETN or WNC?

A blog reader emailed me this question yesterday:

"In your opinion who gets the worst weather (i.e. tornado wise) Eastern TN (Nashville to Knoxville) or Western NC (Hickory area)?"

My first incling is to say "west of the Appalachians is always better." But does this opinion match reality? Let's do a little Mythbusting.

My incling was actually more of an incline. When air moves UP a mountain, it becomes more moist and produces a stronger storm, though this is more applicable for rain.
