Monster Storm: 165 MPH Winds, 5 Feet of Snow!
Trees down, power out, roads flooded, interstates closed, it's a mess on the West Coast this morning. Winds have been clocked to 165 mph and over 5 feet of snow has fallen. News10 has a pretty good story and pics; The Mercury News says that 600,000 are still without power in California, down from 1.5 million yesterday.
Below is a great summary video from ABCNewsOne, Brian Rooney reporting.
NOTE: THE VIDEO ABOVE MAY BE PRECEDED BY ADVERTISEMENTS
Some meteorological notes:
- Aspendell, CA reported an incredible snowfall rate of 16 inches in 4 hours (HPC)
- A number of daily rainfall records were set on the West Coast yesterday and I'm sure we'll see many more today.
NOTE: This blog entry has been superceded by a newer one which has updated information on snowfalls and wind gusts.
Ward Mountain, NV: 165 mph
Mammoth Mountain, CA: 132 mph
Los Gatos, CA: 105 mph
White Pine, NV: 104 mph
Snowbird, UT: 101 mph
Riddle Mountain, OR: 96 mph
Yaquina, OR: 93 mph
Nevada City, NV: 92 mph
Mount Warren, CA: 91 mph
Mammoth also reported 111 mph further down, as well as 149 mph which I believe is suspect due to low sustained wind speeds.
Ship Mountain gave some truly bad data overnight and I no longer believe its original claim of 156 mph yesterday, much less sustained AND gust at 183 mph last night.
