Met: Still Unprepared for Tsunami
A leading meteorologist in Thailand has a couple interesting things to say about the Tsunami which struck that country a year ago (I'm paraphrasing here, see the actual article for details).
1. Hotels in Thailand are still not prepared, even though a national warning system exists
2. Meteorologists in Thailand knew the tsunami was coming, but did nothing about it
3. Man, is he glad to be out of retirement (this guy quit his job in 1998 after much ridicule when he pointed out that a large tsunami could devastate the coastline)
This is all quite amusing since tsunamis have NOTHING TO DO WITH METEOROLOGY (see FAQ). For whatever reason, people don't like hiring seismologists I guess (weather does happen every day I guess, so you get more bang for your buck).
Here in the United States, only 24 coastal communities have been branded "TsunamiReady" by the U.S. government.
