How About That Flintstone Tornado?
Blog reader Samantha saw my blog entry last week, noting that the NWS received a report of a tornado in Flintstone, Maryland, which made it to the Associated Press, who said, in part:
RANDOM TORNADO PHOTOS FROM OUR PHOTO GALLERY (RELOAD FOR MORE):
The NWS hadn't issued any tornado storm surveys for Flintstone after the initial local storm report, so I emailed the Washington, D.C. office to inquire about it.
Jim from the office explained that he had done a storm survey in Hardy and Hampshire counties, but found no evidence of a tornado. Based on a conversation with the Allegany County EMA, there was not enough damage in the county to warrant a storm survey into that area. There were also pictures of a possible tornado or hail shaft but no rotation or roar was associated with the video, according to the photographer.
So, in short, the NWS does not believe that a tornado touched down in Allegany County.
