Forecast for the Penn State Game?
As you guys know, I don't do sports, but here in State College, PA, there's plenty of talk today about what the weather will be at tomorrow's Penn State Game (vs. Iowa at 8 pm). The problem is that there's a good chance it will be cold and rainy. As always, I would look to two things to formulate the best forecast:
1. Our AccuPOP product from our AccuWeather.com Premium site is a great way to plan your outdoor activities (you can get AccuPOP on AccuWeather.com too but it only goes out 24 hours). This shows the "collective consciousness" of our forecasters thinking on when the rain will hit, in a handy bar graph format. It says that the game really couldn't start at a worse time, as almost an inch of rain will fall, mostly between 4 PM and the middle of the night. If this proves true though, tailgates could be OK, especially earlier in the day.
2. The hourly forecast on AccuWeather.com suggests that, because of increasing clouds, it may not even get to 60 degrees, and when it's raining it will be around 53 degrees with a light wind, so it won't be pleasant.
3. The high-res 4-KM WRF model from our Pro site gives a clue as to what the radar might look like tomorrow (of course, this is last night's run and this morning's run won't be out until this evening). This is a pure model guess and is likely to change significantly with the next run. It says that rain will approach the area around 11 AM...
But will be scattered throughout the day in Central PA; the big rain shield - the one we really have to worry about - will only be moving into southwest PA at 8 PM:
At this time, the best thing I could recommend is to bring your jacket, umbrella and be ready for a cold, wet game. Maybe we'll get lucky.
