Flooding Still, This Week Vs. Next Week
The Midwest flooding is not yet completely over, and more is on the way. Below is a comparison of maps between the current flooding, last week's rain, and the 3-5 inches of rain expected next week, so that you can see how closely the areas correspond. First, here are the streamflow conditions tonight from USGS, showing creek gauges that are higher than 90% of today-in-history in blue (see also river gauges which are flooding from NOAA AHPS, rain will affect major rivers too, but with a several-day delay):
Next, a look at the GFS Forecast Model [JessePedia] from our Pro site. The model shows a wide swath of 3-4 inches of rain covering most of the area that is flooding this week.
Let's compare that map to the actual rainfall map that I posted on my blog earlier this week:
Note that this will not be an exact repeat (if the GFS is right, and it's too early to really tell) - the highest amounts over 4 inches are displaced to the north and south of the area that received the big rains this week, with the possible exception of southeast Missouri. However, since everything flows into the Mississippi in this area, however, that probably won't help much and at the end of next week we are likely to see more flooding footage like we saw this week from that big river. And finally just some photographic examples of some of the terrifying flooding that was still going on in Arkansas as recently as yesterday... and unfortunately more is coming.
