Final Report: 327 Record Highs
As a followup to the graph I posted last week, here is the final stats on record reports issued by the NWS [JessePedia] during this warm period (defined as more than 5 record highs per day). The following chart was produced using data from the WeatherMatrix Records page:
The outbreak was impressive. There were 327 record high reports during this period (80% of all reports), with 104 in one day (January 6th). The number of record HIGHs exceeded any number in the stats from 2006. However if you look at the TOTAL number for that day (62 after removing duplicates, see disclaimer below) it didn't rank high enough for the "record records" shown on the WeatherMatrix site, but neither did any day in 2006 (2006 seemed unusually serene).
DISCLAIMER: All number are approximate. Only the "total" number is quality controlled, and only when it is over 70. The "total" number is actually the number of "statements" issued by the NWS (one statement per office but not necessarily one per day). They sometimes include more than one record per statement, hence the number of records exceeding the total number of statements. Stations that include more than one record report per statement are weighted to population areas in the Northeast.
