Cold For March, But How Unusual?
It was brutally cold today in the Northeast. Here at AccuWeather HQ, our weather station had a low of 6.7 and a high of 20.5. As already mentioned, it was also windy. Wind chills dropped to -15 here.
The normal high is 42; this weather is WAY off from the norms, in fact today's HIGH was below the normal LOW temperature (24). But it's not unheard of -- record low temperatures this week are near zero. March 3, 2003 had a day with a low of 3 and a high of 21, so while it's bad, it's been worse. It just seems that, as we hear the birds occasionally start to sing, that we hoped for so much more out of early March.
Blog reader William from the Southeast Regional Climate Center says that the low temperature this morning in Rochester, NY was only 1 degree -- one of only 16 days since 1929 where the temperature has been 1 or less after March 5th.
Wind chills at Mount Washington [JessePedia], NH fell to below -100. (LIVE | ARCHIVED). Their blog said that the actual temperature, which fell to -37, was quite unusual:
