Carolina Beach Vacation: Nearby Storms
The weather continues to be interesting here on the North Carolina coast, but we have seen no major storms here at Oak Island so far. First thing Sunday morning there was a large storm to our west, moving off the coast at Myrtle Beach.
It caused hours of continuously booming thunder here as it dropped hundreds, perhaps thousands of lightning strikes on the sea. Unfortunately there was too much rain between me and it to see the strikes.

Nonetheless, it colored the sky and ocean a deep gray, almost purple, and teal, which made for some great beach photos. The ocean this year has been unusually tropically green and blue, possibly due to the lack of haze as I spoke of in Sunday's blog.
Monday, a tiny storm dissipated as it moved over us during the afternoon, but not too late to drop a few drops of rain through which a low rainbow could be seen:
Here's a look at what was left of the storm as it passed over us:
You'll note I'm looking west here, which is something I wasn't able to do from our previous rental beach house, which did not have side windows or sufficient height. As a weather observer who often looks to that direction to see incoming storms (though this one was moving opposite), this is a thrilling development.
NOTE: I am on vacation this week. Please join me on Facebook if you are interested in seeing photos and updates from my travels to the North Carolina coast.
