Behind the Scenes: NWS Spring Media Workshop
It was a pleasure for Henry and me to attend the National Weather Service State College's "Spring 2012 Media Workshop" today. I was able to meet Harrisburg weathermen Dr. John Scala from WGAL-8 and Tom Russell, Channel 21's meteorologist. The topics of discussion were River Forecasting and 2012 Drought Status, Forecasting Pennsylvania Thunderstorms, and Social Media. Click below for behind-the-scenes photos.
One of the things that we talked a lot about, ironically, was the September 2011 Central PA Flooding, for which I just showcased before and after pictures earlier this week on my blog. We also talked about "Hurricane Henry," the biggest thunderstorm to hit State College in my 15 years here.
I also presented a presentation about Social Media and the Weather (download PowerPoint), which was based off an as-of-yet-unreleased article for WeatherWise magazine and talked about what we're doing here at AccuWeather.com with Social Media.
In attendance from the NWS were Bill Marosi, MARFC Hydrologist, Charles Ross, Meteorologist, Matt Steinbugl, Meteorologist, Peter Jung, NWS Meteorologist (I was on a Storm Survey with those last two a couple summers ago), and others. From the TV world, Dr. John Scala from WGAL-8, Channel 21 (Tom Russell & Nate Wardle), and Channel 27 in Harrisburg were there.
