Are Hotels Changing Niagara Mist?
Geologists at the University of Buffalo have determined that the mist at Niagara Falls is affected mainly by seasonal air and water temperature differences. This kind of sounds like a "duh" at first, but actually Canadian consultants had previously said that the high-rise hotels had helped increase the mist, and decrease the visibility of the falls (which is bad for guests).
Dr. Marcus Bursik and his team used the Skylon tower (shown at right) to judge the height of the mist columns.
Niagara Falls is a fascinating place, meteorologically or otherwise. If you've never been there, you really should pay it a visit. I took the photos on this page during my visit in June 2005.
