2010 D.C. Snow Worst Since Little Ice Age?
I thought there was an interesting note on one of our graphics today, about the "Knickerbocker Storm" of 1922 which killed nearly 100 people via a roof collapse in Washington, D.C. (note that roof collapses have also been reported with this week's storm in New England). What that says is that we are seeing more snow than we have since these houses were built (or since construction thresholds were set). Think about that for a moment.
The note says that Baltimore set a record snowfall that day and D.C. almost did. For 88 years, the record was not challenged, until last year, in fact all the storms that challenged the record were from the Little Ice Age (1600s-1800s, maybe 1922). It's interesting to me, given the recent suggestion that the U.K. cold was the second worst since 1659.
