Major Snowstorm coming for parts of Ontario and Quebec

By Staff

Published Dec 19, 2012 2:28 PM EDT | Updated Dec 19, 2012 11:51 AM EDT

Copied

Confidence continues to grow for a major snowstorm for parts of Ontario, Quebec and northwestern New Brunswick from later Thursday into early Saturday.

High pressure blocking to the north will end up forcing the potent storm coming into the Great Lakes on Thursday to turn more east and actually re-develop over New York State as it slows its forward speed, allowing the cold air to hold in places such as North Bay and Ottawa, leading to a major dump of snow Thursday evening through Friday night.

The Friday morning commute will no doubt be a tough one across this region.

I am pretty confident that Ottawa will see a minimum of 25 cm out of this and likely more.

East winds downsloping off the higher terrain to the east and southeast will lead to a mix or change to rain along the St. Lawrence River region, including Montreal, but there should still be accumulating snow on the front and back end of this storm.

At this point, it looks like the northern extent of the rain/snow line will run somewhere from the Bruce Peninsula to Midland to Peterborough to just north of Kingston/Cornwall and into the Montreal area.

Quebec City should see a solid accumulation as I expect it to be all snow here.

The snowfall map below does not include the lake-effect snowfall behind this storm for late Friday into Saturday. I will issue a lake-effect snow map within the next 24-hours.

The GTA region will see rain then a change to snow showers and perhaps some heavier bursts of snow starting Friday morning as the cold air comes in aloft, but I think roads will just be wet in Toronto through the afternoon, then potentially snow covered and slippery by the evening.

My forecast for the snowstorm.....

-------

There is the potential for another snowstorm around the 26th in the same region as above, followed by a more W to WSW wind lake-effect snow outbreak on the 27th and 28th.
