Tropical Storm Bailu to unleash more flooding downpours in China

By Courtney Travis, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

Typhoon Lekima continued to create terrible flooding throughout Zhejiang Province, China on August 10. At least 33 people were kiled due to the severe conditions created by the tropical storm.

Bailu continues to bring heavy, tropical rains to China, with more tropical development possible in the coming week.

A tropical depression took shape over the Philippine Sea last week and strengthened into a severe tropical storm on Friday; since then, Bailu has lost some wind strength and is now a tropical storm. The storm is known as Ineng in the Philippines.

In anticipation of the storm, Chinese officials evacuated 48,000 across eastern China, according to China's state media agency Xinhua.

Transportation was significantly impacted, as more than 150 flights were cancelled at the Xiamen airport. Ten-thousand ships were recalled in the province of Fujian.

Bailu made its second landfall in Dongshan County in the Fujian Province on Sunday morning, local time, with wind speeds of 90 km/h (56 mph).

Wind speeds of this magnitude are capable of snapping large tree branches, causing power outages and damaging structures.

Bailu is forecast to lose wind strength over eastern China after moving inland over the mountainous terrain; however, some of its moisture will likely be pulled northeastward next week resulting in several days of downpours across Japan.

"Waves of heavy, tropical rain are likely across parts of southern and eastern China, where rainfall amounts of 100-200 mm (4-8 inches)," said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dave Houk.

Areas from eastern Guangdong and Fujian to southern Zhejiang and Jiangxi in the provinces most at risk for flooding rainfall, as Bailu continues to effect the region.

Meanwhile, the West Pacific may remain active through the end of August as another area is being monitored for potential tropical development later this week.

Northern and central parts of the Philippines, which only had minor impacts from Bailu may not be out of the woods just yet in terms of tropical impacts.

Another tropical low in the Western Pacific could develop in the next few days, just east of the Philippines, threatening to bring more heavy rainfall and gusty winds.

There is the potential that this budding tropical system would impact parts of southern China, including those enduring flooding rain from Bailu, or that it could track farther south towards Vietnam.
