Peer through the clouds Father's Day night to see this sight in the sky

A full moon occurs roughly once every month. Each month's full moon has a different name and meaning.

Father's Day celebrations will end with a full 'Strawberry Moon', the first full moon in the month of June and the last full moon of spring. However, thunderstorms and partially cloudy skies will complicate viewing it in some portions of the United States.

Rain will plague the Southern Plains through the mid-Mississippi Valley and Ohio Valley into Pennsylvania Sunday night, likely to block out the moon.

"The rest of the country will have at least partly cloudy skies if not mostly clear," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist David Samuhel said.

The moon will rise around sunset and dip back below the horizon around sunrise, reaching its fullest at 4:30 a.m. EDT, Monday morning. However, according to NASA, it will appear full for about three days around this time.

The last full moon of June received its name from Algonquin Native Americans in eastern North America, who took it as the cue to start harvesting the now-ripe wild strawberries, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac.

Europeans have called the same moon the full 'Rose Moon', which may come from its occasional reddish or rose color while hanging in the European sky. This can happen when the the full moon nearest to the summer solstice shines through more of the Earth's atmosphere than at other times of the year, according to NASA. The agency charts the sun in the Washington, D.C. area to only reach the height of 29.1 degrees above the horizon Monday morning, which will make it the lowest full moon of the year.

The name"'Mead Moon" comes from the drink that is made by fermenting honey mixed with water, tying in with the other name "Honey Moon." It's also thought that the time of this full moon was when honey was ready for harvest. It's unclear how close relations of the "Honey Moon" might be to the "honeymoon" that comes after marriage, as the Farmer's Almanac says June was a traditional month for marriages.

This Father's Day, the full Strawberry Moon will also be in conjunction with Jupiter, the planet to shine just above the moon.

"A conjunction is a celestial event in which two planets or a planet and the moon or a planet and a star appear close together in the night sky," according to the NASA website.

The moon came into conjunction with Mars earlier this month, and will come into conjunction with Saturn on June 18, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac.

The next full moon will by July 16, the full 'Buck Moon'.
