Mosquito modificado combatirá el zika en Miami

Con el propósito de erradicar la población de los mosquitos que transmiten el zika y otros virus potencialmente mortales, científicos en Miami han liberado miles de mosquitos infectados con una bacteria que, en teoría,provocaría esterilidad en el mosquito Aedes aegypti.

La compañía MosquitoMate, con sede en Kentucky, tendrá a cargo el proyecto que liberará miles de mosquitos en la ciudad de South Miami. Con este proyecto colabora también la División de Control de Mosquitos y Gestión de Hábitat del condado de Miami Dade.

MosquitoMate infecta a los mosquitos macho de la especieAedes aegypti con una bacteria llamada wolbachia . Como consecuencia, ninguna cría que se produzca luego de infectados con la bacteria, llegará a la madurez.

La empresa aclaró en comunicado de prensa que no es la primera vez que realizan este tipo de prácticas. En el pasado realizaron ensayos similares en la zona de Cayo Hueso. De igual forma, explicaron que los mosquitos macho no pican, y que la wolbachia no es perjudical para los seres humanos.
