India: Stampede amid rain kills at least 22 in Mumbai
Nearly two dozen people are dead after a stampede broke out in Mumbai, India, on a pedestrian bridge, which was reportedly crowded in part due to people seeking shelter from rain.
Fears of the pedestrian bridge collapsing when a piece of falling concrete hit the bridge’s railing triggered the stampede, according to the Associated Press. At least 22 people are dead. Another 32 have been injured.

The incident occurred during the Friday morning rush and on the bridge that connects the two railway stations of Elphinstone and Parel.
Preliminary weather data from Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport indicate that rain fell occasionally on Friday morning for a total of 0.76 mm (0.03 of an inch).
The rain was associated with a monsoon low taking shape over southern India.
A spotty shower or two is expected to follow this weekend in Mumbai as more numerous downpours target southern India.
