In case you missed it: Northeast rainstorm among heaviest without a tropical storm; Flooding displaces over 300,000 in India

Flash flooding overtook parts of the northeastern United States this week, submerging cars and prompting water rescues.

Over the weekend and into the start of the week, areas from southeastern Pennsylvania to New York City were hit by torrential rain. Little Falls, New Jersey, received 5 inches of rain in about two hours on Monday.

According to AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Elliot Abrams, the unique rainstorm will be regarded as one of the most significant heavy rain events to unfold in the Northeast unrelated to a tropical storm.

Persistent rain has led to one of the wettest summers on record for the region.

Smoke from the raging California wildfires has been drifting across the United States, even stretching as far east as New York City.

While smoke has traveled to the eastern coastline, the particles are sitting about a mile above the ground, limiting health hazards.

However, the smoke has created fiery sunrises and sunsets. Smoke particles work as a filter to allow orange and red colors to pass through the light spectrum, leading to a tinted view of the sun.

The smoke has led to health concerns for the Northwest, lowering air quality levels.

Officials have continued to warn residents from Washington to Idaho to take proper precautions amid the smoky conditions.

A major bridge collapse in Genoa, Italy, caught worldwide attention this week.

A large portion of a raised highway crashed onto roads and businesses below, killing 43 people. Cars and debris fell 150 feet (45 meters).

The collapse occurred amid thunderstorms, but officials have yet to confirm a cause of collapse.

More than 600 people living around the bridge have been displaced as officials confirmed that the entire bridge will be demolished. A 2011 report by Italian highways company Autostrade per l'Italia said that the bridge that collapsed in Genoa on Tuesday was suffering from decay.

Intense monsoonal rain has continued to batter India this week, bringing the flood-related death toll to more than 300 since late May.

More than 300,000 people have been displaced by the flooding, seeking shelter in over 2,000 relief camps. Boats and helicopters have been utilized to rescue residents from flooded areas.

More than 10,000 kilometers (6,000 miles) of roads and hundreds of homes have been destroyed or damaged across Kerala in the southern part of the country.
