The percentage of soybeans planted in the 18 key soybean-producing states monitored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is expected to significantly increase when the Crop Progress is issued Monday, according to an AccuWeather analysis.

“The soybean planting numbers will be close to the 90 percentile and then they’ll likely finish up in the last week of June,” AccuWeather senior meteorologist Jason Nicholls said.

The Crop Progress issued June 17th indicated 77% of soybeans were planted compared to the five-year average of 93%. Also, 92% of corn was planted compared to the five-year average of 100% by a similar date.

The highest percent of soybean planted is in Louisiana (98%), North Dakota (96%) and Minnesota (94%), while the lowest percentage has been planted in Ohio (46%), Michigan (53%) and Missouri (57%).

The five-year averages for those states indicate the problems rain and flooding have caused for farmers. From 2014-18, the average planting for soybeans was much higher for Ohio (94%), Michigan (94%) and Missouri (81%).

“Ohio has come to the front in terms of the most troublesome spot,” Nicholls said.

For the year, AccuWeather predicts 2019 U.S. corn and soybean production will be below 2017 and 2018, and even below the USDA 2019 estimates.

There were 14.61 and 14.41 billion bushels of corn produced in the U.S. in 2017 and 2018, respectively. The initial USDA estimate for 2019 was 15.03 billion bushels, but that number was revised June 11th to 13.68. AccuWeather initially predicted 13.60 billion bushels but revised that number to 13.26 on June 10th.

For soybeans, there were 4.412 and 4.5444 billion bushels produced in the U.S. in 2017 and 2018, respectively. The initial USDA estimate for 2019 was 4.15 billion bushels, which was unchanged when the USDA produced its June 11th estimate. AccuWeather initially estimated U.S. soybean production at 4.001 billion bushels, and revised the estimate to 3.952 billion bushels on June 10th.
