Strong July storm unleashes flooding rain across the Northeast through Thursday

An unusually strong July storm brought flooding rain to much of the Northeast, with flash flooding, travel disruptions and localized rainfall totals up to nearly a foot.

Multiple rounds of severe thunderstorms dumped heavy rain throughout the Northeast on July 28, causing severe flooding.

An unusually strong storm for late July in the Northeast brought a wide area of 2-4 inches from eastern Pennsylvania through much of New England, with some areas in the Hudson Valley near Albany recording nearly a foot of rain. This led to widespread flash flood warnings in southern New York and portions of Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachussetts Tuesday night through Wednesday.

Rain will continue through Thursday before slowly tapering off Thursday night into Friday. The heaviest rain fell across the Hudson Valley, western Connecticut, southern Vermont and New Hampshire and western and central Massachusetts, where 4-8 inches occurred. The maximum observed rainfall was 11.48" near Albany, New York.

"Where torrential downpours persist for several hours in some communities, major street flooding and rapid rises on small streams and drainage canals will occur," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said.

Flooded roadways and poor visibility can significantly disrupt travel, especially along interstates 95 and 87. The greatest impacts are expected into early Thursday morning, though lingering rain may continue to cause disruptions into Thursday.
