Severe storm threat shifts west as heavy downpours continue in the Southeast

A multiday severe weather threat will bring damaging winds and flash flooding to parts of the Plains before expanding into the Ohio Valley, while heavy downpours persist in the Southeast.

Gusty storms, including tornado-warned cells, swept through Illinois on July 27.

After destructive storms, including a powerful tornado in Appleton, Wisconsin, swept across parts of the Great Lakes Monday and the Northeast on Tuesday, additional rounds of severe thunderstorms and flooding rainfall are expected across several regions of the country through the rest of the week into the weekend.

Storms to continue late this week

The heat dome over the center of the country is forecast to continue shifting toward the Southwestern states through this weekend.

"Weak dips in the jet stream moving around the edge of the heat dome will trigger additional rounds of thunderstorms across portions of the Plains," Buckingham added.

On Thursday, some risk of severe weather will shift slightly farther east than the previous day, stretching from northern Kansas to the Canada border.

A more concentrated zone of severe storms is forecast from central and northeast Nebraska to western Minnesota and southeast North Dakota.

Damaging wind gusts and flash flooding are expected to be the primary hazards, with a few of the strongest thunderstorms also capable of producing hail.

On Friday, the severe weather threat will shift south, spanning from eastern Oklahoma through southwestern Tennessee and northwestern Mississippi. Damaging wind gusts, hail and flooding downpours are expected to be the main hazards with the strongest storms.

On Saturday, the severe weather threat moves even further southeast, spanning from central Mississippi and Alabama, northward into much of Tennessee and Kentucky. Flash flooding and localized damaging wind gusts are expected to be the main hazards with the strongest storms.

North and east of the severe thunderstorm zone Friday and Saturday, drenching rain is forecast as an area of low pressure travels from the northern Plains to the Ohio Valley into the weekend.

Downpours to persist in Southeast

As storms rumble over the Central states, the southeastern corner will stay active with showers and thunderstorms into the weekend. So much rain may fall on some communities to not only erase the drought, but lead to localized flash flooding.
