The Florida Without A Summer
UPDATE 7/22: Between Saturday and Monday, 566 daily record lows were broken nationwide. So far this month, 994 records have been broken (both according to NCDC). William also points out that "On July 20th, 2009 the Low T at Montgomery AP (KMGM) was 59. This makes it an all time July record for Minimum Temp. Data goes back to 1872." Also here's an update on the lack of days >85 degrees in the Northeast:
:
ORIGINAL ENTRY: OK, not really, but there were some incredible lows (in the 50s!) there this morning (and in Alabama and Georgia as well). The Southeast hasn't had the consistent cool summer that parts of the Northeast have, of course, but this morning's low temps are another symptom of an unusually cool summer in the East.
Here are some stations I've found with impressive lows:
Selected Official Stations:
Tallahassee (KTLH): 60* Palm Beach(KPAM): 60 Crestview (KCEW): 58* Blakely, GA (KBIJ): 57
Selected Unofficial Stations:
Wilma, FL: 57Blakely, GA: 57Bloxham, FL: 56Troy, AL: 56
*Crestview's 58 sets a new all-time July low temperature for them (they had never been under 61 in recorded history (since 1948). Tallahassee broke their daily low temperature record by 7 degrees but fell short of setting a July low temp (57), according to William Schmitz, Service Climatologist/Meteorologist with the NOAA Southeast Regional Climate Center.
Further northward, our friends at the top of Mount Leconte, TN, fell to 42 degrees. Grandfather Mountain, NC said on their Facebook Page: "A record daily low temperature was tied on Saturday and then broken Sunday and Monday with temps of 47, 47,and 49 respectively."
