Severe Weather in Argentina, Netherlands, Philippines

Severe weather has taken center stage in the news and Social Media this week, owing to severe thunderstorms in western Europe, Argentina and the Philippines. Here's the breakdown:

Lines of severe thunderstorms swept through France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands last night, causing shelf cloud sightings like the one below, used with permission by Facebook user Anna Zuidema) on the Dutch coast, accompanied by lightning maps:

In Argentina, South America, severe thunderstorms downed trees and caused severe flash flooding, killing three and causing the evacuation of thousands. More details are available from MetSul.com. The flooding made front page news in many newspapers including La Manana Neuquen, shown below.

The map, from NASA TRMM, shows about 350 mm (14 inches) of rain in southern Argentina in the last week! The city of Rosario was the subject of our "World Weather Hotspot," reporting winds over 60 mph.

And yesterday in the Philippines, as the remnants of Cyclone Peipah approached with the threat of flash flooding, a tornado was spawned, causing severe damage in the town of Cebu City (hit by Typhoon Haiyan last year), Lapu City and Talisay City.
