HYPE: GFS Promises Big Cold, Snow For All
Even though our long-range winter forecast has December being "warm" in the Eastern U.S., the GFS can't seem to let go of the cold air and has several possible snow events in the Northeast between now and mid-December. But the kicker of them all is this morning's 12Z prediction on December 7th of widespread snow from Canada to the Gulf and ice in the Eastern Carolinas.
The GFS is unchallenged in this time frame, as there are no other models predicting winter precipitation out that far. It could just be a fluke, but the overall idea that the cold (or at least normal) weather will stay in place through mid-December is more the point. AccuWeather.com Professional's Joe Bastardi [BIO] (PRO) still promises that warm up for late in the month, but says that this early December cold could be a doozy. He said last night in his blog:
This has the chance, relative to normals, to be one of the coldest outbreaks of the winter for two reasons: 1) The set up for the cold is one that can deliver extremely cold air for this time of the year, and 2) The warmth of the pattern after it may not allow such strong surges into the major population areas of the United States for much of the rest of the winter.
