Strict deadlines for taking climate action are not that far in the future

By Brett Anderson, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

New research from the UK and Netherlands has shown that governments need to act by 2035 or humanity will cross a point of no return in terms of preventing global warming from surpassing the 2 degree Celsius threshold by 2100.

The authors of the study also noted that the deadline to limit warming to 1.5 degree Celsius has already passed.

The research team wanted to find the so-called "point of no return" or deadline for climate action. In other words, the latest possible year to start strongly cutting greenhouse gas emissions before it's too late to avoid dangerous climate change. In order to reach their conclusions, the researchers utilized the latest data from global climate models.

Removing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere, by using ‘negative emissions’ technology, could buy us a bit more time, according to the study. But even with strong negative emissions, humanity would only be able to delay the point of no return by 6 to 10 years.
