Spring in Canada

By Staff

Published May 16, 2013 12:59 PM EDT | Updated May 16, 2013 12:57 PM EDT

The Spring of 2013 so far has been off to a much different start across Canada compared to last year's Spring.

The image below shows the April 2013 temperature departures. Note how cold it was compared to normal across the Prairies.

The image below shows the Spring of 2012 temperature departures.

By the way, the Spring of 2012 was the ninth warmest on record. We will most likely not even come close to that ranking for this Spring. Records began in 1948.

Growing season precipitation departures across the Prairies for 2013

As you can see, much of this region has experienced near to below-normal precipitation since April 1st. We will be releasing our summer outlook on Monday and it looks like extreme southern and southwestern areas will end up drier than normal, while wetter conditions will prevail across the central and eastern portion of the Prairie region.

Spring temperature and precipitation trends for Canada

The average Spring temperature for Canada has warmed 1.8 degrees C. since 1948. The warmest Spring on record was 2010.

On average, Canadian Springs have turned wetter since the 1970s.

Keep in mind, our Summer Outlook for Canada will be officially released sometime on Monday, though I may post it a little earlier for my readers on this blog.
