Long-range pattern clues through late January
At least for the next two to perhaps three weeks, there are no signs of any fresh intrusions of Arctic air into southern Canada and the United States, as the bulk of the coldest air will be on the other side of the pole down into Russia.
The Pacific storm train is likely to continue through next week and perhaps through mid-month along the U.S. West Coast with rounds of heavy rain and high mountain snow. The strong Pacific jet that has been sending these storms into the West Coast is also responsible for spreading all this milder, Pacific air across the country.
There are indications that a colder and drier pattern will set up the second half of January across the West Coast of the U.S.
Eastern Canada and the Northeast U.S. may eventually go back into a cold pattern by early February.
