Cold takes hold in the Northeast

1. The surface pressure pattern shows the cold air advancing eastward:

2. At the 10 mb level, high in the stratosphere, the main vortex is displaced from the North Pole... as was the case late last week. It is consistent with the currently developing cold regime:
